Curriculum

At Godmanchester Community Academy we teach a knowledge-rich curriculum. Such a curriculum places the highest priority on ensuring that every child is given access to knowledge that reflects ‘the greatest that has been thought and said.’ Giving all children this entitlement should help them to succeed in later life and develop an enjoyment for learning.

Through our knowledge-rich curriculum we enable our pupils to make informed and accurate observations and connections about their world, their locality and their experiences. In addition, we believe that we are equipping each and every pupil with the essential foundations for the next stage of their educational journey, and well beyond.

Over the past few years we have invested time and resource into building our knowledge-rich curriculum. We are proud of the result but are also acutely aware of the need to constantly review and amend: the curriculum is never ‘finished’ and evolves to reflect the world around us. For example, we now teach children about climate change because we believe all children need to understand the causes and effects of this phenomenon – this wouldn’t have been a feature of our curriculum several years ago.

Our whole school overviews (linked below) outlines the curriculum across the school and has been carefully designed to ensure that each pupil’s development through the school is coherent, logical and progressive. Subjects are taught as specific domains (e.g., Science, Art, History, etc.) but where possible connections have been established to strengthen understanding and application of knowledge.

Whilst we endeavour to keep the overviews below outdated, please note that as our curriculum is under constant review and development.

The tab on the right entitled ‘Knowledge Organisers’ provides the detail about exactly what knowledge is taught to children and at what point. Teachers use these documents to plan their lessons from, ensuring that all children receive their curriculum entitlement. We take this concept of entitlement seriously – children only get one education and we have the privilege and responsibility of ensuring that it is excellent.

Please take some time to read the documents below which outline our curriculum but also give further detail about the importance of knowledge within a curriculum. If you have any questions or comments then please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to provide clarification or further information.
